Virus Scare

I had the biggest scare last weekend on my computer. Remember, I just bought a new notebook replacing my old one because there was something with the motherboard per the technician who diagnosed it. At first, the power just went off. Thinking that the problem was the power supply, I bought a new one but still nothing happened. When I took it to the technician, he told me that I will be spending around $300 to fix it. I made a decision to buy a new one instead. I added $200 more, I was able to get a better notebook with free anti malware software.

As I was telling you about last weekend, I was using this new computer and all of a sudden I got a message about a virus attack. I thought it was a legitimate update but when I clicked it, I just saw bars downloading some files on my computer. I immediately shut it off, waited for a few minutes and turn it back on. Thankfully, I was able to do it, then reboot my computer to a later date, run the anti malware and anti virus several times. I found 3 infected files and was able to get rid all of them. My notebook is virus free now. I can say that it really pays to keep all your anti malaware and virus protection softwares current and updated all the time. Sometimes viruses come as a legitimate email or updates, so be careful in clicking those things. If you don't know the sender, just ignore them.

Printer Ink

My printer now says: printer ink low. I am happy now that this message does not pop up every month. We used to have a colored inkjet printer. It was fine until my daughter learned how to print from the computer. I have to buy new inkjet cartridges every four weeks and these colored cartridges are not cheap. I made a major decision by changing our printer from the colored one to a black and white laser printer. You may say that laser cartridges are also expensive but I buy those cheap ink online. I do not buy the branded ink but the generic ones. For one ink cartridge, it can make up to 4,000 to 5,000 copies and that is already a lot. My daughter can now print as many as she wants every day. She calls her printing stuffs "printables".

If you have empty printer cartridges, do not throw them away. You can bring them to a supply store and get store credit for recycling. I used to do that but now I bring them to my daughter’s school for their fund raising.

My New Laptop

Finally I was able to buy the laptop I wanted. I just want a small one (this is 14.1) and light (only 5.1 lbs.). It has 4 GB and 250 hard drive space. It like the bronze color and it is shiny.

This is the second laptop I bought. I still remember the first one, it was a compaq with 6 gigs, bought around 10 years ago for around a thousand bucks!!!. It was one of the best at that time. I never had a problem with the old, actually it is still in good condition but too slow now. I'm wondering how i managed the old one with no dsl or fast cable before. I replaced with a Sony Vaio in 2004. I bought the top of the line deskstop with flat screen and it can still compete with the desktop available in the market today. Now hubby and daughter can share the deskstop while mommy has the laptop for herself.

ISO Files

I was going through my files in the computer and I found several file extensions that I do not recognize. To my mind, what is these file extension iso? So, I asked out IT person at work and she said that ISO files are images of cd/dvd ROM files I have. She also explained to me how to write or burn these ISO files into a CD. I know I am not the only one who gets confuse with the many file extensions we encounter but you can look them up at the file extension library where they have a listing. You can do your research at file-extension-library.com.

New Monitor

We bought a new monitor yesterday at best buy. Actually, this was not planned but our monitor needs to be replaced. Although it was a flat screen monitor but almost six years old and a 15 inch. We wanted a widescreen. When we went to best buy, our intention was to buy an hdmi cable for our TV. Whew, expensive pala! Our TV also uses an hdmi but hubby was not sure if it was a 60 hrz or 120 hrz. Since he got this Bravia, he just wants the best; get the most out of it. So even if we were unsure, we bought the hdmi cable. When we got home, it made no difference on the TV which to me is the most clear and the finest already but it's his new toy so be it. After two hours, we are back in best buy to return the hdmi cable so i told him why don't we just exchange it for a new monitor. Readily, he said yes. So we got this Gateway 19 inch widescreen flat panel lcd monitor with crisp crystal clear picture. We got it for $139.99 which is a steal and only $10 more than the hdmi cable. I told hubbby I am happy he did not need that cable because we got this new monitor instead.

Make Backups Always

Do you know that I do not have pictures of me being pregnant? Did I ever get pregnant? Of course, I did. I have a five year old daughter.

I had my first digital camera before my daughter was born. I remember it was a two megapixel and was already great at that time. I was so fascinated with the convenience of this new technology so when I got pregnant I never used any film camera to take any pictures. I do not know anything about
Online Backups and I even bought an external hard drive to transfer some of my files there to get more space in my computer hard drive. Everything was doing fine until one day my personal computer just stopped working. It does not power on, nothing. I asked my co-worker’s husband to take a look at it and he told me that the hard drive crashed and needs to be replaced. I detached the external hard drive, let him bring the computer to his house to get fixed and gave him money to buy a new hard drive. I was confident anyway all my files are copied to the external HD. My computer came back working again but when I attached the external hard drive, it was empty. All my files, pictures and music were gone!

I have learned my lesson. Right now, I always make backups. I may never get pregnant again. I lost all my pregnant pictures but I have my beautiful daughter to say it all.

The Monster 64GB Flash Drive

The laptop that I am using at home is an old one with only 30GB hard drive. It is almost full and it has affected the speed of the laptop so I bought from Kanguru Solutions website a 64GB Kanguru Flash blu, one of the largest capacity flash drive on the market today where I can transfer all my files, music and photos. It is so handy just like the size of a pack of gum that I can carry it anywhere. Its aluminum housing protects it from being damaged so it’s safe to put it in your purse or pocket. It is packed with several features such as mobile email, no trace browsing and synchronization.

I am so happy with my purchase from Kanguru Solutions website. They also manufacture other computer storage devices such as memory cards, hard drives, cd/dvdrw drives, usb duplicators and a lot more accessories. Always keep them in mind when you need something for your computers.

My New Work Computer

I got a new computer today at my job. My old computer was still fine, about 4 years old, P4, flat screen, XP pro but what I only do not like is that its color (the old cream/bone/white color). With regards to its performance, it was still fine and fast , never cared that some got the newer models. I guess I was a good girl today. Like what they always say, when it’s your time, it’s your time…maybe that applies to my computer too. All I can say is thank you for giving me a brand new one again. I will enjoy it but not right now because I am working on somebody’s desk.
