First Mangoes

First time for me to see some mangoes at the fresh market this year. The green mangoes are available all year round at the supermarket but these yellow ones are only during summer time. I normally buy them by box at the oriental/filipino store but yesterday i saw some at the fresh market. It is being sold by piece at .99 cents. So i decided to give it a try. (the picture shows a day old mango). When we first tried the mango, it was SOUR but now i think i looks better after a day. Hay, how i miss the mangoes back home, super sweet and so yeelloooowwww!

Philippines Dried Mangoes

This pack of dried mangoes is being sold here in the U.S. at Costco. It carries the Philippine brand and these are mangoes from cebu. A trip to costco is never complete without buying dried mangoes. I have introduced this to my friends here and they all love our product.

Proud to be Pinoy.

Thanks to Philippine brand for bringing cebu's dried mangoes to Costco.

Price: $10+

I Ate The Persimmon

Little did I know that hubby likes persimmon. When I was packing them to bring to my job for give away, hubby was like "leave some for me." So this evening after dinner, he showed me how to peel the persimmon, just like you peel a green mango. No seeds inside. You can eat the whole thing like an apple. It is crunchy (i guess because it is not over ripe) and the texture is very fine. With regards to the taste, i could say it is similar to our fruit "chico." I still have to get used to the taste but its alright.

Persimmon

My neighbor gave these to me. They are called persimmon. I sometimes see this at the supermarket at the fruit section but never bought one. I don’t know how to eat them but they are shaped like big tomatoes, hard with squash orange color. I'll try them later.

Ang Bayabas!

It means "The Guavas."

Would you buy this for $3.99/lb?

That's how much they were selling these guavas at the oriental store. It was my first time to see guavas at the store this small and almost buloks na! When these kind of guavas are not these riped, they are actually more sweet than those big ones.

Bibili sana ako kasi miss ko na ang bayabas kaya lang bulokis naman!

Strawberry Picking

This is a late post about our strawberry picking. We went to Donaldson farm in New Jersey. It's is about an hour away from our place. We got to the farm early anticipating the traffic on Memorial day weekend.

The farm is huge and all you see are rows of strawberry plants. As you get to the farm market, you can buy a box for $1. You will use this box to place the strawberries you picked. There were also smaller containers for $.50.

Our halfway filled box. This is the one dollar box they sold to us excluding the contents. The weather was nice and breezy; it was perfect to be outside.

A closer at the strawberry plants full of ripe strawberries ready for picking. They are vine plants that crawl on the ground like bean plants. The fruits sit on a black plastic bags they placed on the ground like a blanket underneath the plants.

Now it's weighing time. You pay for everything you pick but you can eat all you want while picking the strawberries. The per pound price is $2.99. It is a dollar more when you buy from the supermarket. You may say, just buy it from the store then but the experience of picking fresh strawberries is worth more than the dollar difference.

This is a picture of the farmer's market where you can buy fresh fruits and vegetables picked from the farm. They also have plants and baked goods for sale.

Mangoes and Cherries

It is during summer time that we enjoy a lot of fruits. They are in season and a lot cheaper than any other time of the year. I'm referring here not in the Philippines. I know it is all year round there.

Here are my recent buys. I bought a box of cherries from Costso for $8.99. They are not the sweetest but good. Hubby and I started eating them while we were still inside the car on our way home. The mangoes are from the Oriental store. That is what they called "champagne mango." It's $12.99 for one box (15 pieces). So sweet!!!

Sweet Papaya

They were selling this at the flea market. From afar, they look like ripe mangoes pero papaya pala. They are not Philippine papaya either but look so sweet and yummy. The sign says $1 per pound and 1 papaya is at least 5 pounds for the smallest one.

I am not really into ripe papayas but green papayas in tinolang manok are my favorite. Maybe, we'll try one of the big yellow papaya next time.

See more yellows here MellowYellowBadge .
