This morning, I was running super late to meet with my supervisor. We meet once a month to go over anything that I am having trouble with on the job. I am a substance abuse counselor. My husband usually goes to work at six in the morning, but today, he had to go in at nine like I did. Our schedules got totally thrown off. I ended up getting up late and putting the coffee on late. I looked terrible going to work. To make matters worse, I got my to-go coffee mug and I grabbed the top really quickly, surely enough, the entire cup of coffee spilled all over my clothes and the floor. I was wearing a winter white sweater so I had to change. I quickly logged onto my Gmail account using my clear wireless internet connection and sent my supervisor an e-mail explaining that I was going to be a little late. I know that being tardy is her pet peeve and that she is a little ticked about it, but sometimes things happen that you just can’t control. Unfortunately, they happened to me today when I needed to be on time!

Sledding at the Park

The snow last Saturday was a treat for the kids. It was a very calm snow that lasted from early morning up to noon time of Saturday. My daughter kept on asking me to go outside to clean the car. She was offering me to help shoveling but the truth was, she just wanted to go outside and play in the snow. Can i blame her? Her wish was finally granted and the more she got excited when I told her we were going to the park to go sledding.

The park is only a block away from our house. As we got there, we saw bunch of kids already at the field with sleds. I just sat myself on one of the portable bleachers watching her play. The seats were filled with snow but not as much as the aluminum bleachers on the other side of the oval field. These are new additions to the soccer field together with the pet waste stations at the park after they have been damaged by the hurricane last summer.

The snow was a late comer but it sure did feel like winter. I gave credit to the hand warmer I bought at the hardware store two days ago. I lasted the whole time Isabella was playing in the snow.

When it is winter, you always dream of sunny and warm weather. I am not even complaining because we are having our first snowstorm of the season only today. I am not counting the first one because it happened last October. Today's snow is not that bad, it is actually beautiful and calm but for my daughter, the fact of not being outside to play is not cool at all. She wants to go back to the park and play on the playsets that were recently installed after hurricane Irene destroyed the old ones. Two more months I told her. I hope.

It's just me and my daughter this Saturday. Hubby is still at work. When it snows like this, they always have emergency OT until the snow stops. So, no Panera breakfast for us (our usual during weekends) instead we have these:

A garlic toast, eggs and bacon for Isabella with pink lemonade.

And, my egg sandwich on a wheat bread, coffee and watching the snow news on my ipod.

Last night, I and the husband were watching a home and garden show where two cousins did a kitchen makeover in the home of a restaurant owner in Hoboken, New Jersey. Of course we know where Hoboken is and how beautiful is that town. If you have visitors coming over to see New York or New Jersey, you have to bring them to Hoboken to see the view of NYC across the river. It is a beautiful town to walk around, dine and go clubbing.

On that show we were watching last night, some parts of Hoboken were also featured. We right away missed the place. Last time we were there was about four years ago. We want to go again when the weather gets warmer to try Café Michelina, a casual Italian restaurant located on 423 Bloomfield Street in Hoboken. It used to be Fridays every TGIF but we have not been going that often anymore. Those were the days when we were still not watching what we eat and counting on cholesterol. lol. But, last night was a treat, to save me from not cooking and rest early for hubby because he is going to work at midnight.

Daughter had the classic buffalo wings. It was not spicy for her at all. Served with celery and blu cheese.

I had this Bruschetta Chicken Pasta made of muti grain angel hair pasta with bruschetta marinara, garlic basil and tomatoes topped with sliced grilled chicken. The black sauce is balsamic glazed with some parmesan cheese. This is a healthy dish, so filling and the grilled chicken alone can make you full.

I was so lucky that when I got married my parents decided to buy my husband and I our own home. We were doing well on our own, but we could have never afforded to own our own home so early if it wasn’t for their generosity. My husband was really worried that there would be some conditions attached to the gift, and it made him kind of uncomfortable. In order to make my husband feel better about the situation I asked my parents point blank if the expected anything in return from us for the gift. Luckily my parents understood where my hubby was coming from and weren’t offended at all. They did say they had one condition on buying us the house though. They would like us to get a home security system before moving in so that they can feel like we are safe in our new home. We decided if that was the only expectation then we would search home security new yorkand get a system right away. We thought that was a reasonable request and we would be stupid to turn down their generosity because of it.

Here at my job, we get so much goodies during this holiday season courtesy of our customers. Almost everyday we get one or two and right away they open them for everybody to eat. I am so seriously talking here but when you see how Bill Bellamy do a stand up comedy about “Still Free,” it is hilarious. Stand Up For Family is a great show for the family.

My kitchen is busy since noon time. The morning was spent going to the supermarket for last minute ingredients and food shopping. I prefer going to the grocery early Thursday morning than Wednesday night, if i really have to make a second trip. Our supermarket is open up to 4pm today so it is another thing to be thankful of.

So, what's cooking in my kitchen? We are not going to have the Thanksgiving dinner at my house this year but my assignment is to bring some seafood. I am making glazed baked salmon, yellow rice and stir fry asparagus plus two trays of shrimp cocktail my husband ordered.

Our local 7-11 is selling wings. How did I find out? There is a subway restaurant next to it and we were ordering when hubby said we need chips to go with our sandwiches. So instead of getting the chips from SW, i went next door to get the bigger bag of chips. As I was paying, i saw this chicken wings so delicious looking so i ordered 5 pcs of the spicy zing. Food is being prepared right in front of you.

I got the classic doner - seasoned lamb and veal mixture in very thin slices, roasted on a rotisserie. Instead of having it as a sandwich i got the platter that came with rice, humus shepherd salad and some sauce. I am not sure if it is a Turkish food or Greek but it was delicious.

My daughter got the Classic Burger with american cheese, lettuce, tomato and red onion. It was too big. She only finished half of it.

For hubby, he got the chicken shish kebab, marinated chicken breast chr grilled on skewer but since he chose on a sandwich so it came on a big bun.

We got so preoccupied Saturday morning that we forgot we did not eat a decent breakfast. I think we only had coffee and a piece of toast. At around 12 noon, we were like starving so we went out to find something to eat. We saw a lot of fast food restaurants along the way but we were not in the mood for any burgers or friend chicken then we found this $9.99 buffet lunch. We've seen this restaurant before but not the $10 sign. So we went...

First impression: it is clean and not the typical chinese buffet where food are served in big aluminum trays. On this one, they had their food on big square white plates, very clean on the side, not over flowing..just enough and regularly refilled once they see it is becoming empty. They served not only chinese food but some malaysian, thai and vietnamese. I like the place and the food was great. They are more on quality food and service.

Overall experience: Very good, recommended and we are coming back again.

I love holidays especially when they fall on Mondays. Who would not want a long weekend, right? In the case of getting paid at work, having a long weekend affects us who get paid every week. It was the day for pilipino food shopping. We went to a strip mall here in Jersey where you can find a fil. store, bakery that sells/makes pandesal, lechon and kakanin, an lbc, fil restaurant, salon and a vietnamese restaurant. Parking is quite full on weekends especially sundays. After we bought fish, rice, veggies, spices at the fil. store we went to eat at the vietnamese restaurant. The outside of this restaurant is not really appealing but the food is great and cheap. It is always pack and people had to wait for their tables.

I'm stuffed.

This is hubby's. A vietnamese soup with clear noodles, beef, shrimps and crab meat. I forgot the exact name but i know what number it is on its menu.

People-watching has got to be the best part about traveling. I realize that it’s a total waste of time, but there is nothing better than getting to the airport in time to park, get through security and sit down at the bar nearest to your gate for a good dose of America’s finest. Since I don’t travel weekly for work, it’s always a gamble which bar I will be parked at, since I never remember which belongs to each individual concourse between trips. Today, it was a seafood restaurant. I pulled up a seat at the bar, ordered a drink and look around to see what was on Directv. Now, call me crazy, but I would be a little sketched out by eating seafood in an airport. Maybe if the airport were in a seaside city, such as Miami or Tampa, but never anywhere inland. Nevertheless, as I look around, I see many travelers ordering from the menu that could easily pass for a novella. I think I’ll stick with my gin and tonic.

Two weeks after school opened, I found the note the school gave out regarding the proper color of socks the kids can wear with their uniforms. I already bought a lot of socks for her in colors that she likes but nothing in the allowed colors by the school. Some of those socks were already worn but those that are still in packages, I have to return them. I wish I can only make an exchange but they do not have the colors I need.

Would you believe that we don't have a Denny's here in North Jersey. There was one before but they closed the branch so every time we see a Denny's in area we always grab the chance to eat. We like Denny's anytime of the day, not just for breakfast. We were so happy when we saw one in Orlando.

I was very emotional yesterday while watching the televised Ground Zero memorial ceremonies of the September 11, 2001 attack of the World Trade Center which was held at the new memorial plaza. The memorial spot has cascading waterfalls where the names of those of died during the attack were engraved. This year is the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks which resulted in the deaths of almost 2900 people. All of a sudden I had a flashback of the exact time 10 years ago. I was just 15 miles south of New York City and from the Jersey side, we saw the two towers burning with black smoke coming from the building. I could not believe it was happening.

Last night, we were also watching a film shot by two journalists who happened to be at a firehouse near the World Trade Center doing a documentary on a life of a rookie fire fighter. They showed footages from the time the fire fighters went to Tower 1 after it was hit by a plane up to the time they all went back to the firehouse hours after the two towers collapsed. Lower Manhattan was covered with dust so with the people who were running away, some of them have no idea of what is happening at that moment. All the offices, stores, buildings and hotels in Manhattan were abandoned. The two journalists were at the right time and right place to capture everything that happened during the 9/11. They all survived the attack to tell their most unforgettable film adventure so with all the fire fighters on that firehouse.

Saturday Work

I got a phone call early morning from our office manager asking me if i can go to work. We were closed Friday due to some road closures in the area where my job is located. Today the town opened for all businesses but a lot of the residents were still at the evacuation area. This is already the third time this year that this area has been hit by a big flood. The recent has the most widespread damage. It was only two weeks ago that the hurricane Irene was here and here is another flood again. On my way to work, I saw on the sidewalk broken appliances, wet carpets, wood panels and boxes of clothes waiting to be picked up by the town trucks for disposal. My husband was even asked by his friend to order parts for dryer to be used in his machine that got submerged at the basement. Hubby knows a little about fixing washing machines and dryers. He used to have a shop back home before he migrated here and that was his way of living. He is not doing it for money here anymore but when friends call him, he is always willing to do it as long they are not the newer models which are all computerized. It is his joy to help his friends because he knows how expensive to have it repaired here. Usually the labor is more expensive than the parts.

Meet You In Chicago?

This is an overdue travel plan. My husband has a friend In Chicago whom he has not seen for decades now. He was surprised when one day he just got a call from him, not from Philippines but from Chicago. He is here visiting for about a month.

We made plans of driving to Chicago to see him the weekend when hurricane Irene hit the East Coast. The plan was canceled because of bad weather then the following weekend we were already set to see the U.S. Open so we had no choice but to reschedule it or maybe we can just ask his friend to come here instead so that we can tour him around New York City. He already saw Chicago via the Chicago bus tours together with other Filipino tourist in their community. They did the Highlight, City in a Garden and Stained Glass tours through Pontarelli Worldwide Ground Transportation. We saw the pictures he posted at the social networking site where he left a comment that it is time to see New York after his Chicago tour.

I hope my husband can get his two day off approved so that we can finalize his friend's trip here. Our target date is on September 15-18. I hope this will push through this time. We will post pictures right away.

Guess What I'm Cooking Tonight?

I have the string beans from my daughter's baby sitter's garden then the eggplants and bittermelons (ampalaya) from hubby's tennis partner, then I will just add some squash and shrimps that i have from the refrigerator and I am all set for pinakbet tonight. I used to put pork but i switched to shrimps as per hubby's request and he also does not like okra so i had to make changes. All is well, still the good old pinakbet that i used to love.

Irene Was Here

The hurricane Irene made a landfall here at the East Coast early this morning. Preparations for the hurricane have been made days before its expected landfall. There were hundreds of evacuation areas for residents who are required to leave their homes especially those who are living along the shore. Hospitals evacuated or air lifted their patients to other hospitals that will not be affected by the hurricane. Residents of assisted living homes like the Assisted Living Ohio were also evacuated to safer grounds. This is also the first time that New York City shut down their mass transportation service. By noon time yesterday, all buses, trains and subway stopped operating. Almost all businesses in the city were closed due to the hurricane Irene.

This morning, we woke up with good news. Hurricane Irene already made its land fall but as we heard in the news, there were no major damages in our area. The wind and rain that was very strong before we went to sleep last night had died down. Irene was in our area not as a category 2 hurricane but she was downgraded to a tropical storm when it hit new jersey and new york areas. Infrastructure damages are minimal although of residents still have no power as we speak. Transportation in the big city is slowly coming back to normal. A thorough inspection has to be done especially the subways before they open to the public again. Tomorrow it will be a bright sunny day here but the clean up has just began.

Home Cooked Meals

In preparation for the coming of hurricane Irene, I cooked a lot of food for storage just in case we lose power and we cannot cook. We did not eat neither of them yet because last night we ordered pizza. We will have some for dinner tonight and the rest will be for the rest of the week. Saves me from cooking after work. Getting Ready For The Storm

I was doing some research on home security cordova when I saw the breaking news on my Direct TV. Our governor has declared as official state of emergency as we prepare for the coming of the big storm. People that are living along the Jersey shore are asked to leave voluntarily and stay away from the water. We also got a phone call here at my job from the local police that they will start evacuating families that live close to the river. There is an area here where it gets flooded when the river crests after a big storm.

I am very sure supermarkets will be packed starting today until before the storm arrives. I already have a list of what we need. We have enough food in our refrigerator but I will stock up on water and batteries. I already asked my husband to fill up his van. I will do mine on my way home tonight.

It is still a wait and see situation. If Irene will change path, we will just get rain. We continue to pray that people will be safe in their homes or wherever they are. Be safe everyone.

Our Weekend

We pretty much spent our weekend in a park in NYC. My husband had a tennis tournament which started Saturday and was supposed to end yesterday but because of the rain, the games were ended around 4pm. This tournament is held every year for single and double matches. The number of entries this year tripled than the previous years. It needs some crowd control especially during the first two hours after the games started last Saturday. There was a temporary velvet rope within the registration area and barricades were installed during lunch time. Lunch was free and nobody was checking if you joined or not so everybody was invited to eat. Food was abundant so I guess they expected the big crowd.

My husband lost in the semis for the single match. The double match was still ongoing when the rain started to pour yesterday. The game is being rescheduled either tomorrow afternoon or Saturday weather permitting. I am wishing hubby and his teammate good luck for tomorrow or the next game. Hope they will make it to the championship round.

She Will Be Wearing School Uniform

In two weeks, school is going to open. My daughter’s first day of school is on Sept 2nd which is a Friday for only half of a day! I do not know why they decided to start the school on a Friday, the day before Labor Day weekend and for only four hours. If you are away that time, most likely you will not cut your vacation or I will not be surprised if not a lot of kids will show up that day. In the past, they always start school after Labor Day but this year turns out to be different.

Another thing that is new for this school year is they will start wearing uniforms. High School and Middle school have started wearing uniforms two years ago and they decided to include the elementary this year. I have no complaints about it. Actually, I like the idea that kids wear uniform to school. The top will be anything maroon and the bottom is khaki pants, skirt, skorts, or shorts. For the footwear, no specifications were given but of course no flip flops or slippers to school! With regards to my daughter, she does not really care (for now) whether she wears uniform or not but she requests for skirts not shorts or pants.

Seeing DearFriends For Only 60 Minutes

Few weeks after I have made reservations for our hotel and flight to Florida, my friend who lives in San Francisco called me to reserve the days August 8 and 9 because they are coming over here in New York for a vacation. First thing I told her was to move the dates to a week after but it was too late too. We picked the same dates for our vacation, they are coming over that day and we are leaving for Florida that same day too at different airports though. And also, Isabella’s god mommy, who is a cosmetic dentist in CA, was with them.

So they came last Monday here while we were in Florida. They spent two days in New York, and then they drove upstate to see the Niagara Falls. From Canada, they drove for 12 hours to Washington, D.C. to see the White House. Despite all our hectic schedules, we managed to set a date to see one another before their flight back to San Francisco and that date was last night. Originally, we were supposed to meet over dinner but it did not happen again, then at 10pm, then finally at 11:30 pm at the hotel where they checked in. We just saw one another for a good one hour and bade goodbye again. They leave early morning so they have to be at the airport so early. We were just laughing about the circumstances. Hoping it would not take another 6 years before we see one another again and not for an hour only!

When we talk about breakfast, we always have bacon in mind but we know how fattening they are. We tried to lay the the cooked bacon on a paper towel to absorb the fat before serving and we see how fast the paper towel gets wet. Here is a different way of doing it. You can hang the bacon on this one:

See the fat at bottom plate? That's how much fat intake you can have if you eat all these bacon. It does not totally get rid the fat but at least lessen. I love bacon but i don't eat it that often now. Maybe once in a blue moon.

Flooding in NC

Have you seen the flood that hit North Carolina? I was watching the news and i saw houses and cars underwater. I even saw a hotel roof gave way because of a flash flood. The drainage pipe that runs through the roof burst flooding the hotel with water. This was a big inconvenience to people who are staying at the hotel and on vacation. As i was watching all these on TV, I called my friend who lives in North Carolina to check how her family is doing. At first, she did not pick up the phone but after few minutes she called me back. She was teary eyed in telling me about what happened in NC. They are not in the flood area but she knows people that got effected. I forgot to ask her if she was able to get a storm damage insurance for her house. I was doing my packing when I remember that the airlines now charge you for a fee for every checked in baggage. The last time I was on the plane was when we went to the Philippines and I do not remember being charged for checked in baggage. The controversies about these fees make airline passengers check how their chosen airline charge before heading to the airport. There are already two bags sitting in our living room with custom labels with name, address and telephone number made by hubby but if the airline will charge us more than $50 for two, we will just bring one. I can use one of the custom label for the daughter’s backpack.

I am talking about changing my cell phone number. I just hang up with the phone company inquiring on how to change it. I have this number for a while now but I do not know how sales people got hold of it and they keep on calling every day. Like today, it is only around 10 am I already got 3 calls, one selling phone cards to Philippines, another one asking me if I am interested in buying real estate in Hawaii and a cable company. Sometimes, my phone rings in the middle of the night!!!

When I called the phone company today, they said it is very easy to change my phone number. If it is the first time to have it changed, it is free then I get charged afterwards. They checked my record and I will have to pay this time. I am having second thoughts now because it is not cheap and sooner or later, I will still get these calls back. Health Plan renewal

It is that time again that we renew our health plan at my job. When we see our boss having a meeting with the health insurance representatives, we all get nervous. This normally happens at the end of July but this month they came so early and now the results are already out. We have both medical and dental plan on our health insurance and you have the option whether to enroll in just one or both. As expected, the premiums have increased again with no discount plan available for single, husband and wife or family at all. The increase is almost 40% and everybody is not happy about it.

I talked to my husband about the increase in our health insurance and we decided it is better that he will just enroll me at his job’s insurance. We did not do this before because I only pay very minimal premium but because of the huge increase, we are considering it this time. Now it became unreasonable to be paying two premiums. After we do this transition, there would be no problem for me to just work from home and still be covered under hubby’s insurance.

Here is my daughter with her almost melting vanilla ice cone. It was almost 90 degrees and it only took few minutes and the whole thing was already melted. She still had fun though ( that's all that matters).

The Lake

When summer time was getting closer, I was busy online searching for spots where we can spend the weekend and have fun in the sun. As much as possible I want to avoid the shore because of the traffic during weekends. We have been to a lake before but the lake that I found was within a state park at the hilly part of New Jersey. They have beautiful photos of the lake online so I checked the available amenities. You can go swimming, boating, camping, hiking and barbeque. When you go, be there early so that you can still get a spot right very close to the shore with picnic tables and grill. If you are a bit late, you can sit on park benches and site furnishings around the park.

We have been to this lake three times already. What I love most is they close the whole park before it gets too crowded with people. We have friends that came around 12 noon, they were not allowed to get in until the lake reopens again at 3pm when other people start to leave. They also have the carry in carry out rule. Everything you bring in the lake, you have to take them when you leave including your garbage. We all love this lake. We might be back again soon.

I really love the taste of fruit. I guess that's a good thing because I never had to worry about not getting enough of my fruit and vegetables. I saw this one recipe for a green strawberry smoothie that just sounded so weird that I had to try it out, so I did. I think that it's one of my new favorite smoothie recipes now! My Daughter At Work

I am so happy that it is a short work week this week. We were off Monday. It was the 4th of July holiday. The four days went by fast and one of the most excited about Friday (which is tomorrow) is my daughter. I do not stay at work the whole day on Fridays so my daughter always tag along. She is fine in the morning then she gets bored when she stays beyond six hours. To keep her busy, I bring all her electronic gadgets and her laptop. We have a wifi here at work so she can go online and do some Dress up Games. I found a website called fupa.com but I do not let her play all the dress up GAMES because some are not for small kids like her.Some games are too sexy for her. She can play the pretty princess makeover or fairy game dress up.

Here at work, my co workers like her a lot. Sometimes they will ask her to do little errands like bring some fax copies or mails to me and my daughter is all willing to do it then she will tell me, “Mommy, I am a good helper at your job.” When Mister Softee comes, they always treat her with ice cream or bring her something when they go on a lunch break. These are some of the reasons why she loves tagging along with me on Fridays.

A Beach Day Postponed

Another birthday celebration supposed to be for hubby at the beach last Sunday but we woke up with pouring rain. I did not see that rain in the forecast though. It was still warm for swimming but defeating the purpose of getting some tan with no sun shining. The beach birthday celebration was canceled for another Sunday this summer.

Actually, it was only the beach swimming that was canceled not the birthday celebration. Around 7pm, we still saw one another at the fireworks display in our town. It was held at the parking lot of a big mall. Everybody that was supposed to go to the beach was there and they brought a cake shaped like a big tennis ball (hubby is a tennis player) for my husband. It is exactly the same cake that we saw in the brochures. It is a cake made out of cupcakes at the bottom with big icing on top. The color of the cake matches exactly the color of a tennis ball. So with the fireworks lighting the sky, we were singing happy birthday to hubby and eating the cake. It was a yummy red velvet cupcake/cake.

Here is a picture of the tennis ball cake made of around 20 red velvet cupcakes instead of layers of cake. It was a very delicious cake.

It's the 4th of July

It is supposed to be a shopping day today because of the huge sales at the mall but i woke up lazy and do not want to be in the crowded mall at all. I was in the cleaning mode instead. Before I start with my chores, i made breakfast for us - grilled cheese with eggs.

I started with three piles of laundry. While waiting, i sorted out the mails i took from our mailbox the other day. I even checked our residential mailboxes downstairs for new mails but we have no mails today because it is a holiday (i forgot). It is the time that our mailboxes in our building is so tidy and uncluttered. Watch, as soon as the weekday starts, they will be full again.

It is hot and humid outside. I will try to finish all my chores then have a little nap then we will go to see the Macy's fireworks display at the Hudson river. We will just find a spot in Jersey where we can see them from afar. We already saw some fireworks from our town last night but the Macy's is the huge one. It is televised on TV but to see it live is more beautiful.
